Culpepper Cardiac Foundation Hosting Inagural Fishing for a Heart Tournament

by James Coulter

Melanie Brown Culpepper has a huge heart for her community that she loves. She plans on sharing that love to help the hearts of others by raising money for defibrillators through her upcoming tournament.

The Culpepper Cardiac Foundation will be hosting its inagural “Fishing for a Heart” tournament on Sat., June 12 at Lake Shipp in Winter Haven. Check-in will start at 5:30 a.m. at Lake Shipp Park and weigh-in will commence at 3 p.m. at Tanner’s Lakeside.

Attendees will be able to win big cash prizes. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, with $500 for second place and $250 for third place. A concurrent all-day event will also be hosted at Tanner’s Lakeside with raffles, 50/50 lotteries, live music, and children’s activities.

Proceeds from the event will help raise money to purchase defibrillators that will be set up around Winter Haven. The money will finance the devices and their storage containers. The Winter Haven Fire Department will determine the best high-capacity areas to place these devices, Melanie explained.

Melanie Brown Culpepper started the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation in memory of her late fiancée, Michael Culpepper, a local security guard who passed away due to heart conditions and failure. Despite the best attempts by first responders, Culpepper was unable to be revived.

“I am doing this all for my fiancée,” Melanie said. “It is my drive in me to do all I can to save someone else in his name.”

Since being founded nearly a year ago, The Cardiac Culpepper Foundation has hosted various fundraisers. Recently, they hosted a 5K walk that raised $5,100 for two $1,000 scholarships. One scholarship went to an EMT student, the other for a cardiac student.

The Foundation has also purchased two defibrillators that will be set up at different locations in Winter Haven. One will be set up in Melanie’s own store, Melanie’s Cutting Edge. The other will be set at Old Man Frank’s where Michael Culpepper was head security for many years.

As someone who is on 13 local boards and committees, Melanie Brown is always willing to help her community however she can. She has a big heart for the community, and she appreciates how the community has a big heart for whatever she does.

“I just want to say I am always glad the community comes together and supports me, whether for a raffle or as a sponsor, and people coming out to help with any cause,” she said. “I appreciate everyone who comes together for help or do this for my own personal foundation.”

Other upcoming event including a fundraiser at Balmoral Resort this summer, a pool tournament in September, and the Hearts Unlimited Gala in November.

The “Fishing for a Heart” Tournament will be hosted on Sat. June 12 from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will start at Lake Shipp Park, located at N Lake Shipp Dr SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880.
